I recently completed my PhD looking into the spatial distibution of Alopecurus myosuroides, a particularly problematic weed of winter wheat in the UK. I loved my project and my work so much I decided to stay on as a postdoc. I have expanded my horizons slightly though and rather than modelling the distribution of one weed, I am looking at the entire weed community and trying to understand what drives the within-field diversity of arable weed communities, not only from a crop protection point of view but also to better understand the ecosystem services provided by those communities. My work is part of a wider strategic programme or research looking at sustainable farming systems and particularly how we can support ecosystem service provision on farms and encourage the build up of natural capital.
